When I was a little girl, I used to find my mom and ask her if there was a drawer or closet I could organize. I didn’t do this out of obligation or in hopes of getting extra spending money, but because I truly found organizing to be fun. My interest didn’t stop at organizing spaces, but extended to organizing information as well. When I was a pre- and early-teen, I did administrative work for my dad in his home office, with tasks ranging from filing to data entry. Looking back, I realize how odd these activities may seem for a 10-15 year old, but at the time I had figured out something I really enjoyed, so of course that was how I wanted to spend my time.

Today, I am a thirty-year-old accountant and I use my organizational skills constantly. They are of course useful in the details of my job with numbers and data, but I also consistently use organization to keep my life in order at work, at home, and on the go. My desk at work is always tidy, I keep my email inboxes to a minimum, and on the rare occasion that I misplace something, there are not a lot of places to look before it is found. The act of organizing also functions, for me, as a form of meditation, as the process of getting things into order can help calm my mind.

I realize that the level of order in my life is not necessarily a reasonable goal for every person. I was clearly born with some innate drive to have everything in its place all the time and that just isn’t the case for many, or even most, people. I do believe, however, that there are many habits and tricks that anyone can use to become more organized, no matter what that means for them. Every idea I write about will not work for every person. This is not a one size fits all solution, but I do hope to provide suggestions, advice, and some starting points for people who are looking to be more organized.

I plan to write weekly about a wide range of topics, but would also love to get suggestions from readers. If you have specific questions or topic ideas, please contact me via any of the available methods. You can submit a comment or message through the website or contact me on Gmail, Twitter, or Facebook, all of which use the DucksinaHexagon username.

I look forward to helping you bring a little order to your life!
